In the FIFA World Cup 2022, teams are divided into eight groups of four. Each team plays three matches in a group and receives three points for a win. A tie results in one point, and a loss results in zero points. The winner of a group is the team with the most points. If a game ends in a tie, there is no extra time.

The use of extra time happens once the group stage ends. The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout. These 16 teams play round of 16 and from here every match played is a knockout round. This means the matches cannot end in a draw. Every match has to have a winner. So if after the completion of 90 minutes, if a match ends in a draw, the extra time is used. The 30 minute extra time is divided into two halves of 15 minutes each. Even after the end of Extra time, the match is held draw, then match result is decided over penalty kicks.

Each team is allowed five penalty kick attempts. The team with the most successful attempts wins the game. If there is no clear winner, penalties are used again until one team has a lead. Goalkeepers are not permitted to receive yellow cards during penalty shootouts.
