How many countries per continent qualify for 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup – The FIFA World Cup 2022 is a hot topic these days. Everywhere we go, we see people having a discussion on the upcoming world cup. Yesterday, I met my friends for coffee. There, my friend asked me how these 32 teams were selected for the FIFA World Cup? I explained him very well and felt like I know and have good information regarding football.
Then he asked me, how many countries qualify from each continent? This was the moment I knew, I f***ed up! 😛 You surely know that meme! I was unable to answer that!
So after coming home, I researched and studied how the quotas are allotted to each continent for their qualification. So today, I will be sharing with you all the information I have collected based on my 45 minute study.
How many countries per continent qualify for 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup?
The 32 teams from six confederations qualify for the FIFA World Cup. These six confederations represent the six continents of the world. Each continent has its own quota of teams to select based on qualifying rounds. So let’s check the quota per continent.
- Asian Confederation: 4.5 countries
- African Confederation: 5 Countries
- CONCACAF: 3.5 countries
- CONMEBOL: 4.5 countries
- Oceania: 0.5 countries
- UEFA: 13 countries
- Host country: 1
After the above data, many might think what is 0.5 country? What does it mean? Well, after the qualifying rounds in Oceania, one team will be selected which will play the interconferation playoff against a team of another confederation with 0.5 quota (for example: CONMEBOL: 4 teams will directly qualify while the fifth team will face the winner of Oceania). New Zealand were the winner of Oceania confederation but they lost the inter confederation playoff against Costa Rica. So Costa Rica qualified while New Zealand missed the spot. Hence no team from Oceania confederation will take part at FIFA World Cup 2022.
Which are the teams qualified for the 2022 World Cup?
- Asian Confederation: Saudi Arabia, Australia, South Korea, Iran and Japan
- African Confederation: Cameroon, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia
- CONCACAF: Canada, Costa Rica, United States and Mexico
